THE FIRE WITHIN

The work of Aazaad Projects is grounded in the foundational philosophy of Abaadh (आबाध).

Abaadh (आबाध) is a word that evokes being unbound and expansive, while also deeply rooted in care, integrity and accountability. It embodies an internal philosophy guiding how we relate, reflect and show up in our work. It represents an ongoing commitment to unlearning, undoing and decolonising how we care, connect and create change. It is the internal core — the fire within — from which all of Aazaad Projects flows, ensuring our work remains deeply rooted in anti-oppressive and abolitionist principles.

THE FIRE WITHIN

AAZAAD

आजाद (AAZAAD)

In Hindi translates to free or independent – to live unbound, to move without permission, to belong only to yourself and your people. It carries with it the breath of independence, the pulse of fearlessness and the quiet resistance of those who refuse to be owned. Aazaad speaks not just to the absence of constraint, but to the presence of dignity, will and the deep memory of liberation. Aaazad is what I hear in Arundhati Roy’s work: “Another world is not only possible, she is on her way. On a quiet day, I can hear her breathing”.

RELATIONAL CARE & RADICAL FREEDOM

Together, Abaadh (आबाध) and Aazaad (आज़ाद) hold the heart of our practice: deep relational care and radical freedom, anchored in justice and mutual respect. They invite everyone we work with to enter a space of honest dialogue, shared responsibility, radical imagination and transformative change.

CARE & FREEDOM

THE CALL

THE CALL FOR AAZAAD

The call for Aazaad has echoed through the ages, across continents and borders, from thousands of people chanting in unison to the whispers of those who recite it in private. This namesake holds a spirit of freedom that can be drawn upon, no matter who or where we are or what we are contending with.

Having ancestral roots for me, Aazaad resonates with my commitment to transformative systemic change, intersectional strategies and a belief that all liberation from oppression is interconnected.

ME

I was born in Mumbai, India and spent my childhood in Tanzania before migrating with my family as a child to Gadigal and Dharug Lands (aka Sydney). I grew up a first generation migrant settler in the white leafy suburbs of north-western Sydney and most of our family live to tell the tales. I have been based in the central desert for the past decade as a visitor across Anmatjere, Warlpiri and Arrernte Lands and I am currently residing in Mparntwe, Alice Springs. My commitment to Aazaad as a political and philosophical framework has been shaped by my lineage, migration experience and the communities and people I have been grateful to live and work alongside. It arises from a lifelong reckoning with colonial and racialised oppression and the irresistible creativity of seeking freedom and justice, together.

PRACTICE

PRACTICE

For over two decades, my frontline professional experience in human services has taken place at the stark intersections of power, culture, race and resistance, where meaningful change is both urgent and possible.

I have worked extensively with young people and family groups across advocacy and leadership roles in family and domestic violence, mental health, program co-design, community organising and reflective supervision. Anchored in abolitionist and anti-colonial approaches, my praxis centres relational integrity, critical systems thinking and building collective power for sustainable long-term change.

COLLABORATIVE ACTION

I am passionate about supporting and working with communities, people and organisations in taking strategic action guided by their priorities and expertise.

In the past, I have been involved in co-designing programs and initiatives that centre community knowledge and leadership as well as intercultural collaboration between First Nations communities, migrants and settlers.

COLLABORATIVE

INTEGRITY

RELATIONAL INTEGRITY

Dedicated to intersectionality in practice, I value cultural humility and cultural safety, critical reflexivity, strong theoretical and principled inquiry and a refusal to collapse complexity for comfort.

Aazaad is a promise, a commitment and a practice that refuses the false choices of empire and instead reaches for a freedom that is relational, collective and fiercely alive.
